The US economy had more than 10 million job openings as of September 2021, according to the most recent analysis by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of people who left their jobs hit a record 4.4 million, more than 160,000 more than the previous month.
The phenomenon of Americans leaving their jobs en masse has come to be known as “The Great Resignation.” Many workers who cannot do their jobs remotely have quit their jobs in search of a better opportunity. Although some employers struggle to find enough workers, every state has at least one business with thousands of workers in one location.
To determine the largest employer in each state, 24/7 Wall St. looked at Dun & Bradstreet 2021 Company Rankings. Companies headquartered in a particular state have been ranked based on the number of employees in that state at a single location. Sector classifications come from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
While many large companies like Walmart and McDonald’s employ thousands of people in almost every state, these employees are spread over many locations and the company is likely headquartered elsewhere. The companies considered for this list are headquartered in the state they represent and many employees are in one location.
Many of the largest employers in any given state are hospitals or other medical centers. These organizations need a large number of medical providers, nurses, maintenance staff and more to provide round-the-clock care.
Other large employers include brands that have become synonymous with their home state, such as LL Bean in Maine and Nike in Oregon. In many cases, the largest employer represents an industry that has become the economic backbone of the state, such as energy in oil and coal producing regions or tourism in resorts. It is the most iconic work in every state.
